ABOUT HELEN
Helen Carcio has been involved in women’s health care, both educationally and clinically, for the past 15 years. For ten years she was an associate professor at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in the nurse practitioner program. She was awarded the Teacher of Year Award there. During that time she wrote a column for the Hampshire Gazette, in Northampton, Massachusetts titled “Women’s Health Matters” . The column addressed the health care needs of women in the community and offered a forum for women to address their concerns.
Helen is the author of five clinical textbooks. Two published by Little, Brown, titled Health Assessment, and Essentials of Pathophysiology. Since then she has evolved from these diverse subjects into the women’s health forum and has recently written Manual of Infertility and Advanced Health Assessment of Women: Clinical Skills and Procedures, both published by Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins. She edited Rebecca Cady’s The Advanced Practice Nurses Legal Handbook. She is presently writing her fifth book, on women’s health to be published by Springer in 2009.
In addition, Helen lectures extensively on a national level on women’s bladder health issues, and is a frequent guest lecturer at NPACE. She has recently written 9 feature articles in the nationally recognized publication Advance for Nurse Practitioners, where she is a member of the advisory board. Her articles included How to Establish and Manage a Bladder Health Program, The Use of the Vaginal Pessary in the Treatment of Stress Urinary Incontinence, Urodynamic Testing, Mixed Incontinence, Regaining Control and Urogenital Atrophy. She has appeared on numerous television and radio shows.
Helen is the founder and director of The Health & Continence Institute of Western Massachusetts. She is also founder and president of HC Institute for Health Professionals (HCI), which provides training modules to assist in the establishment of continence centers on the national level.
